Coleby is big, athletic, physical, and (so far) that's about where I start running out of good things to say.

Carter has some game, but he's a JuCo and is still in the learning curve and transition to D1 ball. He appears to be "getting experience" right now.

Both still need to hit the boards stronger.

Trying to watch those 2 will be like watching Dancing With the Stars and wanting to watch the guy who's not very good, but you keep finding yourself watching the hot chick in the skimpy clothes who can flat out tear it up.

You have a totally different take on them than wufan does.

Aargh's description is accurate at this point. Basically we have 3 post players (Coleby, Carter and Lufile) that need to at LEAST combine to make up for the loss of Hall and Orukpe. I don't think any of them will match Hall individually (maybe Carter by the end of the year) so the hope is that the three of them can replace 2 people's production from last year. If they can then the guards and wings will do the rest and we will be just fine.

Not at all. Here is my assessment from the thread titled, Report from midnight madness:

"Darius carter won the dunk contest. He is very strong and athletic and runs the court well. He did not score when Cle was guarding him. He did not stop Cle from scoring. Hopefully that is because Cle is very good.

Kadeem Coleby is very strong and athletic and runs the court well. He needs to work on his positioning and footwork. I'm not sure if he can score with his back to the basket, but he is an explosive leaper. At 6-9, 250 he will be the most fun to watch post in the Valley. If he can score with his back to the basket and defend, he might be the best post in the Valley."

Here's the post you were probably thinking about when you made the comment above (from the MVC Newcomer of the Year thread):

"I will be very surprised if there is another post in the league that has the strength and athleticism to compete with either of these players."

Coleby and Carter will likely be the strongest and most athletic posts in the conference. As was pointed out, there are other ways to compete. As noted above, Carter didn't score on Cle well and didn't defend him well. Coleby hasn't shown the ability to score with his back to the basket and has poor footwork. Aargh's assessment is accurate that once you get past the size and athleticism, Coleby has a lot of work to do. Carter is learning. These guys are really athletic.

That is the post I was thinking about. It still seems more optimistic to me than Argh's post regarding your post play to this point.. In any case I didn't mean it critically of you or him. Obviously it's possible to have differing opinions of the same player(s) even among kindred fans.

Now that the Shox have an established program and the recruits in line to probably keep them around top-25, I've discovered an attitude thing. When fans are comfortable with the quality of their team, it's easy to be more objective about the talents of the players. When fans are not confident of their team's abilities, it's easy (and very tempting) to hype the players on the team.

Lufile and Coleby could be among the top post players in the league this year, but that's not a tall order. Carter could be a monster PF/C by the end of the year (hopefully mid-season) but he's not there now. JuCo's - even the JuCo AA's - tend to take half a season before there's really any indication of what they can do.

Orukpe couldn't consistently catch or pass the ball and could hit dunks more than half the time, but he was still a monster on D and a major contributor to WSU's F4. He totally disrupted opponents drives and inside game. If Coleby and Lufile can just interfere with drives to the hoop, block a few shots, and keep opponents' post players from getting great position, that's probably all they need to do.

Big, athletic post players without a lot of game can be coached to be effective by preventing easy scores when they're playing D. For those who remember some former WSU post players, opponents prett6y much scored at will against Durley and Stutz. Durley might have dropped in 20, but he might have given up 30. The big, athletic post players WSU has had since Stutz and Durley may not have dropped in more than 5 ot 6, but they may have prevented 20.

Put me in the group that wants to see Baker play the point a lot. He is not good at it.

Insults are really more effective if you just say - "Sellout at midnight - Go Shox". Other team's fans know they'd never do that. You don't need to remind them - they will do it themselves.

Lufile doesn't even look like the same player. Coleby can block shots, not sure he has much offensively. Yes, I know I am drawing conclusions entirely to early.
